Researchers show that in recent years, Alzheimer’s disease has increased by more than 50 percent.

As millions of Americans increasingly survive into older adulthood, Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias is expected to more than double by the year 2060. Alzheimer’s is the fifth leading cause of deaths in adults 65 years and older – a disease that destroys cognitive and memory functions. The illness is known as a progressive brain disease in which abnormal protein deposits build up in the brain – the result of dead brain dells.

Not only is Alzheimer’s irreversible, but an estimated 5.5 million Americans live with the disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Not only does Alzheimer’s cause memory loss, but it also affects a person’s ability to eat, move and do some things by themselves. The disease is not typically the direct cause of death, but complications from the illness are factors that contribute to death.

A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows ethnic imbalances are clear among adults 65 and older. Researchers show that Hispanic Americans will have the largest projected increase of the disease due to population growth over the projection period of 2060. As the U.S. population increases, Alzheimer’s and dementia related cases will also rise amongst the minority population.

Caregivers and Family Need Help and Guidance

The increase in caregivers is also evident as loved ones learn to care for those with the disease. Even though most people want to provide care to their loved ones, caring for a person with Alzheimer’s, can be overwhelming. Each day brings new challenges as the disease worsens over time. Alzheimer’s is usually called a family disease, as it is the chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline and affects all family members. It is key for caregivers to also focus on their own needs, their health and get support to be able to sustain their own well being during the caregiving journey which can be an extended period of time.

The caregiver’s role changes over time as their loved one needs change. Understanding what kind of behaviors to expect, and researching facilities and centers that can give support and respite to caregivers is key. There are many resources available to help and provide guidance.
