When people mature, they think about a life free of stress, less responsibilities and the freedom to dedicate more time to family, friends and activities they feel most passionate about. However, a most important element of aging is exercise and physical activity. If you have not been active, you can slowly work your way up, but we recommend checking with a health care provider to see what is right for you depending on your age and health.

Exercise delivers all the same benefits to seniors that is provides to someone in their early years of life. Did you know exercise has been known to increase mental clarity, boost energy, increase longevity and can delay the process of becoming more sedentary as old age and retirement creep up on you? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), exercising regularly can delay or prevent most chronic diseases faced by adults 50 and over. The CDC states that, 33% of men and 50% of women ages 75 and older, engage in very little or no activity at all. Even more alarming is that the World Health Organization states that much of the world is becoming less physically active. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Physical activity encompasses all activities, at any intensity, performed during the 24 hour day. You’re never too old to keep active, adapting to your age is all that is required to perform a physical activity.

Can exercise prevent or slow memory loss?

According to the Mayo Clinic, regular physical activity can benefit the brain. People who are more physically active may be less likely to see a decline in their mental function, perhaps have improved thinking and be at a lower risk to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Physical activity tends to improve thinking, increase blood flow to the brain and increase chemicals that protect the brain.

At Right Choice Adult Care & Activity Center we believe it is important to implement some type of physical activity for our clients that we serve on a daily basis. We are pleased to be a SilverSneakers® partner within the Lake Mary, Florida community, where we have an instructor visit our center to help change the lives of our seniors and make an impact on their days spent with us. Classes are offered by a licensed SilverSneakers® instructor: Monday and Friday – 1:30pm, Tuesday – 11:30am, Thursday – 10:30am.
